Microtrace was founded in 1985 in Minneapolis, MN. In 1985, Microtrace acquired the Microtaggant® Identification Particle technology from 3M. Microtaggants were the original taggant technology and the source of the name ‘taggant’. Since 1985, Microtrace has continued to enhance the Microtaggant technology, develop new taggants and introduce other security solutions to fit the changing horizon of security issues.
In early 2000, FIPS security labels were added to Microtrace’s portfolio. Microtrace created FIPS labels with subsurface printing, different than surface printing typically used.
In 2005, Microtrace established its laser division. The division is comprised of experts in the field of micromarking and micromachining laser marking. Our laser division excels at the difficult and ‘impossible’ laser marking requests with presence in Minneapolis, New York City, Germany, Asia and Europe.
In 2012, Microtrace released the revolutionary Molecular Taggant™ to address issues of dilution while being untraceable to counterfeiters.
Also, in 2012, Microtrace released the only multifilament yarn available with multiple levels of security – Microtaggant® Security Yarn.
Microtrace’s proprietary Spectral Taggant™ Security Ink was developed and implemented in 2013 as the need for reliable field testing of inks increased.
Microtrace will continue to enhance current technologies and develop new solutions.
